COPD (Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) is a chronical and slowly progressive disease of the lungs that, like astma, is formed by a constriction of the respiratory system. As a result, the flow of air decreases and the transportation of air to the lungs becomes more difficult.
While with astma the airwayrestriction is reversible and manifests itself for the first time during childhood , COPD usually becomes visual at the age of 45 years when the constriction is irreversible. In more an 90 percent of the cases, it's a result of years of smoking.
Chronical bronchitis and emfysema are 2 forms of COPD, each with its own characteristics. They can happen together or separately.
Chronical bronchitis
Chronical bronchitis is a chronical inflammation and constriction of the airways in which the protective layer of the respiratory system and
the tiny hairs that filter the airways are damaged.
Emfysema
Emfysema is the result of a progressive damaging of the alveolar sacs and the alveolar walls. The lungs loose their elasticity. When a patient breathes out, not all the air is removed from the lungs. Emfysema is a symptom that can be found with the more severe forms of COPD.
